India’s fastest train has cracked up on its first trip, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the train.
The Indian-built high-speed train, dubbed “Vande Bharat Express”, reportedly jammed due to brakes failure when it was returning to the capital Delhi from the city of Varanasi after its first outing.
The driver notices smoke in the last four coaches, soon after the brakes failed, and power was lost in all compartments.
According to Indian media, the train may have struck cattle on the line, as it reached a speed of 180km/hr during the trails. There, however, was no signs of damage on the front of the train reported.
Railway officials and journalists, those on board during the trial, had to take another train back to Delhi.
The Vande Bharat Express service is expected to start its commercial trip from Sunday, and is said to reduce travel time between Delhi and Varanasi by six hours.
