New National Security Adviser Appointed As Hanif Atmar Resigned

Hanif Atmar, the National Security Adviser to President Ashraf Ghani has resigned and Hamdullah Moheb, Afghan ambassador to United States replaced him as the new security adviser.

Atmar’s resignation was accepted by President, presidential spokesman Haroon Chakhansuri tweeted in his page.

The copy of Atmar’s resignation letter indicates that he had developed “serious differences over policies and principles with the government leadership”.

Atmar had previously served as the country’s interior minister under former Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

He has served as a close aide to Ghani since 2014

The reported resignations come amid a deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, which in recent weeks has been hit by several deadly attacks carried out by suspected Taliban or Islamic State (IS) militants, including a rocket attack near the presidential palace in Kabul.
