Ghani off to Turkey for OIC Summit on Jerusalem

President Ashraf Ghani, heading a high-level government delegation, left Kabul for Turkey to attend an extraordinary meeting of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) leader in Istanbul yesterday evening.
A press release from ARG (Presidential Palace) stated that Afghan president would express the Afghanistan’s government and people’s views and concerns with regard to recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moving the US Embassy to the contested city at the Wednesday’s gathering.
Ghani is accompanied by Acting Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and other government officials on the visit.
US President Donald Trump on December 6 announced recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, triggering an almost universal diplomatic backlash.
The decision sparked protests all over the world. Thousands of people in Afghan cities also staged protest rallies against President Trump decision.
Most of OIC members are expected to attend the day-long special conference called by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his capacity as the chair of the OIC summit.
