Twenty-five couples tied the knot at a mass marriage event in the capital of Balkh province yesterday.
Arranged by the Provincial Information and Culture department, the mass marriage ceremony was held at a hotel in Mazar-i-Sharif. Twenty relatives of each the couple were invited to attend the ceremony.
Youth affairs official at the culture and information department Azimul Haq said the couples were registered for the free marriage with the help of adverts.
An Afghan National Army service member was among the bridegrooms. He told said that he was proud of being member of the Afghan army but he could not afford his marriage in his monthly salary.
Sweeta, one of the brides, said she was happy that they spent no money on their wedding. She said those who spent heavily on weddings should instead help poor couples.
