NATO and US forces top commander in Afghanistan on Monday said the upcoming elections in the war-torn country would be conducted under complete and reliable security.
Gen. John Nicholson was addressing a gathering in the capital of Kunduz province, where Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak, Intelligence Chief Mohammad Masoom Stanikzai, Chief of General Staff Gen. Sharif Yaftali and some other authorities were present.
Gen. Nicholson said they were continuing their support with Afghan forces like they did in the past. He assured the upcoming elections in Afghanistan would be held under full security.
Gen. Nicholson said US President Donald Trump had also put pressure on Pakistan to avoid supporting terrorists. “I seek apology from Kunduz people for the mistaken civilian killings during foreign forces bombardment.”
“Taliban can never reach their goal and authority through combat, so it’s better for them to choose the way of peace.”
Meanwhile, Wais Barmak told the gathering any group fighting against Afghan forces would be fought against. “We plan to conduct periodical operations against insurgents in winter season across the country.”
Kunduz Provincial Council Head Mohammad Yousuf Ayoubi also spoke on the occasion, calling the security situation in the province as worrisome.
