Russia strongly rejected Afghan president’s allegation that Moscow supports the Afghan Taliban, a statement from the Russian Embassy in Kabul said yesterday.
“We have taken note of reports in some Afghan media of statements regarding Russia’s “support” for the Taliban movement by President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani during his recent trip to Paktia Province,” the statement reads.
Reacting strongly to the Afghan president statement, the Russian diplomatic mission said they considered such statements unacceptable by the head of a friendly state of Afghanistan.
According to the statement, “On the contrary, Moscow is rendering multiple forms of assistance to Kabul, including help in consolidating the combat capabilities of its national security forces.” It added Russia had urged Afghan leaders not to follow along with the anti-Russia hysteria fanned by some Western media.”
President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday accused Russia and Pakistan of supporting the Afghan Taliban who he said responded to his call for peace with suicide attacks.
Ghani, who travelled to southeastern Paktia province to condole with families of the victims of recent terrorist attacks, accused Pakistan and Russia of supporting the Taliban by providing them weapons, training and money.
