A batch of 200 drug addicts was discharged from a rehabilitation centre in Kabul yesterday upon completing a three-month treatment course. Another 200 junkies, collected from various parts of the city, were transferred to the centre after the previous group was discharged.
Dr. Fida Mohammad Paikan, deputy Public Health Minister, addressing a meeting at the 1000-bed hospital for addicts, said about 100,000 people addicted to drugs live in Kabul. Paikan said the fresh batch were mainly from among drug addicts living under Pul-i-Soktha Bridge. They were rounded up with help from the ministries of counter-narcotics and interior.
Paikan warned of a possible return of the treated patients to their old habit and also voiced concern about the poor cooperation of families. He said recently 11 family members of addicts were arrested for transferring drugs to addicts under treatment.
