Afghan Peace Talks: Quadrilateral Group to Meet in Oman Tomorrow

Representatives of Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and the United States will meet in Oman tomorrow to discuss reviving peace talks with Afghan Taliban. The four-nation Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QGC), comprising Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and the United States, has been trying to ease the path to direct talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, with little success. Meanwhile Taliban refused to attend the meeting. “Nobody has contacted us, nor are we participating in this meeting,” a senior Taliban official told VOA when asked whether the Islamist insurgency intends to join or approve the so-called Quadrilateral Cooperation Group, or QCG. The QCG was launched in January 2016, but the peace process broke down after a fifth session in May of that year, when a US drone attack killed the leader of the Taliban, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, while he was traveling through the Pakistani province of Baluchistan.
