Famous Historian Nancy Dupree Dies in Kabul

Nancy Hatch Dupree, a well-known American scholar on Afghanistan, passed away at the age of 90 in Kabul today. Nancy first arrived in Afghanistan in the 1962 and worked tirelessly to document the cultural heritage of the country. An internationally recognised expert on the history, art, and archaeology of Afghanistan, Nancy wrote 5 guidebooks for Afghanistan Tourist Organisation, the guide to the National Museum and over 250 pieces on topics including the reconstruction of Afghanistan. She also established Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University, which is first place in the country where Afghan history and culture can be studied, with collection of 80,000 documents. “I join friends in mourning the passing of Nancy Dupree, founder of the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University,” Liza Schuster, the Research Manager at the centre, wrote on his Facebook. Born in 1927 in India to American parents, Dupree first came to Afghanistan in 1962 as a diplomat’s wife.
