Local officials in Helmand said that Afghan security forces cleared the remaining parts of Nawa district of Taliban insurgents. Afghan security forces recaptured centre of Nawa district a month ago, ending 12 months of Taliban control. A press release from Helmand governor’s office stated that Nawa district has been totally cleared of Taliban insurgents. The statement added that an operation to defuse the mines planted by Taliban in parts of the district is underway. The statement further stated that dozens of Taliban fighters including commanders were killed during the operation. Taliban militants have not commented on the statement yet.
