National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) announced that more than 70 percent of Kabul’s underground water is polluted with viruses and harmful chemicals and not safe for consumption. The agency said that the water does not meet safety standards. Mohammad Kazim Homayon, head of planning department at NEPA, said that Kabul River has polluted underground water in Kabul with pollutants that could cause cancer. He asserted that the government has done nothing to clean the water for drinking water. Homayon warned that if the situation continues like this, in a few years Kabul residents would be forced to migrate. Meanwhile NEPA said that lack of law enforcement, corruption, and lack of sound management are the mean reasons why they have not been able to address the challenge yet.
