NATO to Announce More Troops to Afghanistan at Summit

NATO will announce its decision to send more troops to Afghanistan at a summit to be held in Brussels on May 25 where Afghanistan’s security situation will be reviewed. It will be the first NATO summit attended by US President Donald Trump. Earlier NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told a German newspaper that in view of the challenging security situation in Afghanistan, the 28-nation alliance was weighing an increase in personnel for its Resolute Support train and advise mission which is at present about 13,000. The US general commanding NATO forces in Afghanistan, John Nicholson, had in February told Congress he faces a “shortfall of a few thousand” troops, and warned that “we’re in a stalemate”. The United States has about 8,400 troops in Afghanistan and another 5,000 are from its NATO allies.
