Security forces reported that the death toll in Shaheen 209 Corps attack has increased to at least 100 Afghan National Army (ANA), killed or injured. Security officials in Balkh said that six suicide bombers, in Afghan military uniform, stormed Shaheen 209 Corps base in Mazar-e-Sharif, provincial capital of Balkh, yesterday afternoon and targeted ANA when Friday prayers were underway. Abdul Qahar Aram, spokesman for Shaheen 209 Corps, said that the attack started at 1:30 pm and the gunfight lasted for at least five hours. All the attackers were killed by Afghan security forces. He added that eight ANA were killed and 11 others were injured but a credible security source said that 66 ANA were killed and 73 others were injured. Meanwhile Colonel John Thomas, a spokesman for the US military’s Central Command, quoted by Reuters said, “We’re talking probably more than 50 casualties.” Taleban claimed responsibility for the attack.
