The European Union is preparing to offer millions of dollars to support a peace deal between the Afghan government and Hizb-e- Islami party. The EU’s top envoy to Afghanistan Franz-Michael Mellbin said that he is currently reviewing Afghanistan’s suggestion for financial assistance. The Wall Street Journal reported that the EU hopes that all armed anti-government groups will be encouraged to join the peace process with Afghan government. The report added that the preliminary support of EU could be between 2 and 5 million USD. Meanwhile Mohammad Karim Amin, head of Hizb-e-Islami peace delegation, said while they welcome countries and organisations working to bring peace in Afghanistan, but they have not asked for financial support from any country or organisation. Yesterday the Afghan government announced that some 70 Hizb-e-Islami prisoners in government jails will be released this week.
