Zardari: Afghan-Pak Border Fencing to End Terror

Former Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari said the management of the border in consultation with Afghanistan was vital for peace in the region. He said that it will also help resolve the issue of militancy and terrorism. Pakistani media reported that Zardari has called for concerted and sincere efforts by both counties to overcome mistrust and suspicion. The former president expressed the hope that the move to begin border fencing will be welcomed by all those wanting an end to militancy and the counter-productive allegations of cross border incursions. Pakistan, according to media reports, has started fencing work along the Durand Line to stop militants from crossing over. The Afghan government has said it will not allow Pakistan to fence the Durand Line. Najib Danish, the deputy spokesman for the Ministry of Interior Affairs, said the government was not aware of the construction work. He warned that Afghanistan would move to prevent any such project. “Building fences or any construction is not acceptable for us and we won’t allow anyone to do it,” he told the Associated Press.
