Officials at the Ministry of Public Health reported that the first spring polio campaign began today. Health Minister Firozuddin Firoz said that the ambitious three-day polio campaign will immunise 8.8 million children under the age of five across the country. The minister added that polio is a child killer and the vaccine is the only protection against the disease. He urged parties involved in the conflict to cooperate with implementation of the vaccine across the country to prevent coming generations from permanent paralysis. The minister has urged families to take their children to the nearest clinic. Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are the only countries where polio is still prevalent.
