Officials at Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC) warned that if the discussions on digitising the election process take longer, the date for parliamentary and district council elections will be delayed. Imam Mohammad Warimach, head of IEC secretariat, said that their technical studies regarding use of new technologies in the electoral process and voter registration is continuing. Warimach said that if discussions on digitisation and use of new technology in the election is not finalised soon, they will not be able to hold election in the next solar year. Meanwhile Afghan Civil Society and Election Network (ACSEN) said that there were pre-existing signs that parliamentary and district council elections will not be hold in the next solar year. The term of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house of parliament) was extended by presidential decree. The decree issued in July last year stated that members will continue as people’s representative until the holding of election and appointment of new representatives.
