Today, eight of March, marks International Women’s Day, a day observed around the world to commemorate the struggle for women’s rights. In Afghanistan women suffer all kinds of violence and abuse in spite of the millions of dollars spent in improving their status and rights. Underage marriages, beatings, rape and murder are an all too common experience of Afghan women and girls. The United Nations declared March 8 International Women’s Day in remembrance of a march and rally through New York City’s Lower East Side on March 8, 1908, by 15,000 women garment workers, including many immigrants. They were demanding economic and political rights, and honouring a similar march by their forebears in 1857 on that date.
