Ministry of Education (MoE) said that some 460,000 students are enrolled at literacy courses across the country of which 62 percent are women. Allah Bazjom, director of literacy at MoE, said that the biggest challenge facing expansion of literacy is insecurity. Bazjom added that low level of public awareness, people’s participation in literacy programmes, and lack of equipment and facilities are also the challenges that MoE faces. Earlier yesterday Sardar Mohammad, deputy director of literacy at MoE, said MoE has prepared new books to improve literacy. He added that the books were prepared based on new curriculum for improvement of youth’s and elder’s literacy considering student-centered approaches. According to figures by MoE, 60 percent of Afghans are illiterate of whom 80 percent are women.
