In a message to a global meeting spotlighting the growing challenges of anti-Muslim prejudice and hatred, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appealed today for drawing strength from the principles of inclusion, tolerance and mutual understanding to recognise the value of diversity. In a video message the secretary-general said, “Discrimination diminishes us all. It prevents people – and societies – from achieving their full potential.” He added, “In times of insecurity, vulnerable communities that look different become convenient scapegoats.” A report in the Indian Express said Guterres quoted from the Holy Quran to say people everywhere need to feel that their cultural identities are valued. The high-level event was organised by the permanent missions of Canada and the US to the UN, the delegation of the European Union and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Guterres said, “Together, let us stand up against bigotry and for human rights. Together, let us build bridges. Together, let us transform fear into hope.”
