Construction work in 16 development projects have been suspended due to conflict and insecurity in Helmand province. Mohammad Khan Nasrat, head of the provincial economy department, said the crippled projects were under the departments of health, agriculture and social affairs. The projects were located in Lashkargah and other districts. He added that had the projects not been derailed, lots of jobless people would have found employment. Provincial council members and civil society activists say worsening security has not only halted development projects but also threatened people’s lives. Development projects can be implemented in Helmand only when all districts are cleared of insurgents. For the past few months, clashes have been reported between government forces and armed anti-government groups in parts of Lashkargah.
