The U.N. chief made the remarks following the talks among the foreign ministers of Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
The United Nations Secretary-General told reporters after the General Assembly meeting that Security Council powers all want “a peaceful and stable Afghanistan where humanitarian aid can be distributed without problems and without discrimination.”
These powers seek “an Afghanistan where the rights of women and girl are respected, an Afghanistan that is not a sanctuary for terrorism, an Afghanistan with an inclusive government representing all sections of the population,” the U.N. chief said.
The country’s new Taliban rulers who unveiled a new government this month say they want international recognition.
Their all-male and noninclusive cabinet seems unlikely to win the international support and recognition.
The Taliban meanwhile have requested to address the U.N. General Assembly but the United States, which sits on the credentialing committee, has made clear that no decision will be made before the summit ends early next week.
