The report highlighted that in nearly 1,600 incidents, 1,677 civilians were killed and 3,644 others wounded in this period.

According to Afghanistan’s human rights watchdog, the Taliban has been responsible for 56 percent, pro-government forces for 15 percent, IS/Daesh for seven percent, and unknown men for 22 percent of the civilian casualties in the first six months of the year.

The first six months of the year has been the deadliest for civilians, said Zabihullah Farhang, spokesman for the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC).

The Taliban actions mainly caused the increase in civilian casualties, he added.

The Afghan government, however, has issued denial to the report, blaming the Taliban group for war crimes and the rise in civilian casualties.

Ajmal Omar Shinwari, spokesman for Afghan Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF) said the report was down-to-earth and unrealistic.

According to him, more than 220 civilians were killed or wounded in the previous one week.

He added that as many as 1,323 Taliban fighters were killed and 770 others injured in Afghan forces operations in the past one week.

At least 132 other members of the armed group were arrested during these operations, he added.

The increase in fighting and the Taliban attacks in recent weeks have made civilians evacuate their residences.
