Afghan Conflict Parties Responsible to Safeguard Humanitarians: UNAMA

Following the murder of a dozen mine clearers working for the Halo Trust de-mining organization in Baghlan, central Afghanistan, the U.N. Assistance Mission says Afghan conflict parties are responsible to protect “humanitarians” in areas of their control.

In a statement released Thursday, the U.N. agency has condemned the “deeply-shocking attack” on the Halo Trust organization’s workers who were attacked by gunmen on Tuesday.

“All parties to the conflict have a fundamental responsibility to safeguard humanitarians in the areas they control,” the Kabul-based mission said. “Yet it is clear that certain parties & people within their ranks are deliberately targeting them.”

It called on all parties willing for peace to take action and end the likewise “terrible crimes”.

“All those parties claiming to desire peace for the Afghan people need to demonstrate concrete action to support their claims and put an end to the terrible crimes such as witnessed in Baghlan Afghanistan,” it said.

On Tuesday, around 10:00pm local time, 10 Halo Trust workers were killed and 16 others when gunmen burst into their compound in Sheikh Jalal area in Baghlan-e Markazi (Central Baghlan) district of the province.

Afghan officials blamed Taliban for the attack.

According to Jawed Besharat, provincial police chief, the fighters took several from nearly a hundred of workers in a room and then opened fire at them.

The group however denied involvement and condemned the horrific attack.

Meanwhile, media has reported the IS/Daesh claimed responsibility for carrying out the attack.
