A day after armed Taliban captured Shahrak district of country’s western Ghor province, Keramuddin Rezazada, member of parliament, said, the district’s acting police chief, Burhanuddin Sultani, has joined the group with all his personnel and military gear.
Mr. Rezazada added the personnel surrendered to the armed group included 90 soldiers who joined the Taliban with all their military equipment.
The police chief evacuated the district headquarters without fighting, according to him, and a day after joined the group.
Afghan officials have yet to comment.
Armed Taliban on Sunday stormed police headquarters of Shahrak district, blowing up a car rigged with explosives that killed nine army soldiers.
Following the car bomb attack, the fighters captured the district.
It comes as the last remaining American and NATO troops began withdrawing from Afghanistan May 1.
The pullout has seen a sharp increase in Afghan fighting.
U.S. President Joe Biden announced the drawdown plan on April to end his country’s “forever war.”
