Taliban spokesman Muhamad Naeem tweeted that a delegation led by Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, deputy head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, on Sunday met with Tomas Niklasson, the EU newly appointed envoy for Afghanistan.
Both discussed the Afghan peace process, the withdrawal of foreign forces, the European Union’s humanitarian aids to the country as well as security and safety of foreign diplomats, he wrote.
The visit comes as Washington’s special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation has begun his trips to the region to advance the peace process.
The envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Sunday held talks with Afghan leaders in Kabul, including President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, chair of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation which oversees the government’s talks with the Taliban in Qatar.
