Afghan interpreters, guards and other employees who had worked with foreign forces in the past are fearful and seeking to flee as foreign forces leave Afghanistan.
The Taliban in a statement assured them not to fear as long as they “show remorse” for what they did in the past.
“They shall not be in any danger on our part,” the Taliban said in a statement.
“The Islamic Emirate would like to inform all the above people that they should show remorse for their past actions and must not engage in such activities in the future that amount to treason against Islam and the country.”
The Taliban saw them as foes while they were working with foreigners, according to the statement, but would no longer be in danger when they leave “enemy ranks.”
“Hence they should not remain fearful and should continue living a serene life in their own country,” it read.
Afghans employed by foreigners, particularly interpreters, are fleeing the country due to insecurities as foreign troops are withdrawing the country.
