Mohammad Kababyani, deputy head of council of Ulema (religious clerics) for western region of the country has been assassinated by unknown men in Herat province.

Kababyani was killed today morning in Kababyan area in Enjil district of Herat province while he was on way from mosque to home, said provincial police spokesman Ahad Walizada.

Efforts had begun to hunt down the perpetrators and arrest them, the spokesman added.

Arif Jalali, chief physician in Herat regional hospital, meanwhile, said that the victim was taken to hospital while sustaining injuries but lost his life due to severe wounds.

No individual or armed group has claimed responsibility for the murder.

Afghan government points the blame at Taliban for targeted killings, but the group has constantly denied involvement.
