The Taliban in a statement declared an Eid ceasefire, ordering its fighters to halt offensives against government forces.
According to the statement, the Taliban fighters were “instructed” not to conduct any offensives against government forces “countrywide” during the three days of Eid ul-Fitr,” the Taliban statement read.
“But if the enemy conducts any assault or attack against you during these days, stand ready to robustly protect and defend yourselves and your territory,” it added.
The ceasefire was announced two days after a school in west of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, was attacked, killing and wounding dozens of civilians, mostly schoolgirls.
The Taliban denied involvement in the attack while Afghan government blamed the group to be behind.
President Ashraf Ghani in a video message on Sunday declared this week’s Tuesday as national day of mourning to honor victims of the Logar bombing on April and Saturday’s attack on a girls’ school in Dasht-e Barchi, west of Kabul.
