The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday quoted that Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the talks had been postponed to after Muslim holy month of Ramadan and that talks would begin after Eid-al Fitr.
“We have consulted with Qatar, the US and the UN,” tweeted the Turkish Foreign Ministry, citing Mr. Cavusoglu. “We have decided to postpone the Istanbul Conference on the #Afghanistan peace process after Eid al-Fitr.”
He spoke to Turkish broadcaster Haberturk that the postponement was over preparation issues.
Sources, however, told Reuters that the Istanbul summit would not be happening on the set date because the Taliban had refused to participate.
The postponement was confirmed by two other sources, including one official whose country is involved in the planning process.
