Afghan Ministry of Interior said Tuesday, April 20, that Taliban insurgents on Monday wanted to attack on a security outpost in Ghoryan district of Herat province, using a car rigged with explosives.
Government forces identified the suicide bomber and foiled the attempt before hitting the target, it said.
Herat provincial media outlets, however, said in a statement that two security soldiers were killed and as many as 15 people—12 civilians and three soldiers—wounded in the bombing.
Several nearby houses were damaged after the explosive-loaded car went off, it added.
The car bomb attack was followed by clashes between Taliban militants and government forces.
According to the statement, 15 insurgents were killed or wounded in clashes with Afghan forces.
There was no immediate comment from the Taliban.
According to provincial officials, the Taliban carried out at least 40 attacks, including four car bombings, in Herat province in the past one month, inflicting majority of casualties and damages to civilians.
