Efforts to Accelerate Peace Process: U.N. Envoy Arrives in Doha

The U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said on Thursday that U.N. Secretary General’s special envoy for Afghanistan and head of the mission, Deborah Lyons, has arrived in the Qatari capital of Doha where she is set to meet with Afghan and Taliban negotiation teams as well as U.S., Turkish and Qatari officials.

She will discuss ways to reduction in violence and stepping up the peace process, the mission said.

Lyons’ visit to Doha follows her meeting with President Ashraf Ghani in the Afghan capital of Kabul where they discussed “initiatives” to step up efforts for peace and reduction in violence.

“Both agreed on the need for an inclusive process that respects the country’s constitution & the protection of the rights of all Afghans,” said the U.N. mission in Afghanistan.

It comes as an upcoming Turkey-hosted peace conference on Afghanistan is set to be held later this month.

The April peace conference has invited representatives from both the Afghan government and the Taliban.
