Attaullah Afghan, head of provincial council for southern Helmand province, said unknown armed men shot and killed Haji Ghulam Jan Aka, a tribal elder in Lashkargah city, the provincial capital.
He was an influential person among his people, according to Mr. Afghan.
The provincial media outlets also confirmed the murder, saying the perpetrators managed to flee the scene. Investigations were underway, he said.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.
A wave of targeted attacks, often unclaimed, has gripped Afghanistan already torn by decades long war and violence.
