German lawmakers, according to Reuters news agency, late on Thursday approved a new mandate which allowed up to 1,300 of its troops to stay in Afghanistan until 31 January, 2022 as a part of NATO mission.
It comes as U.S. new administration under President Biden is reviewing the peace deal inherited from former President Donald Trump administration so it is not clear whether or for how long NATO will keep its troops in Afghanistan.
The United States is meanwhile pressing for a peace deal to end fighting between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Talks between the Afghan sides in Qatar have become stalled.
The German government has warned that an early or premature withdrawal of NATO troops could jeopardize those peace talks, adding that NATO troops would need to prepare for Taliban attacks if they stay beyond the 30 April deadline.
