Kamal Khan Dam is helping irrigate about 175,000 hectares of land and generate up to nine megawatts of electricity.

Located on the Helmand River in Chahar Burjak district of Nimroz province, the Kamal Khan Dam was first conceived in the 1960s. However, war hindered completion of the project until President Ashraf Ghani resumed work on it in 2017.

Afghan government officials have said during the construction of the dam, armed Taliban had carried out 35 offensive attacks and bombings.

As many as 39 security forces had been killed or wounded in those attacks and many others were captured by the militants alive.

Another 98 Taliban attacks targeting the dam had been fended off.
