At separate decrees, President Ashraf Ghani has appointed Hayatullah Hayat as acting interior minister replacing Mohammad Massoud Andarabi and Ayoub Salangi as the ministry’s first deputy.

The new replacements were announced to bring reforms, improve the security situation in the country, protect civilians and to better implement the self-sufficiency plan.

Under another decree, the President has made a replacement to the post of defense minister. According to the NSC’s statement, General Yasin Zia has been appointed as acting defense minister replacing General Assadullah Khalid.

According to the statement, General Zia will hold the post until former minister Khalid gets recovered and returns home.

The new announcements come as violence has surged in Afghanistan with the Taliban preparing for their spring offensive.

On Thursday, Russia, the host country for Moscow summit of “Troika”, joined by the United States and several other countries called for a ceasefire in Afghanistan during the peace talks in the Russian capital.

In a joint declaration at the end of the summit, the United States, Russia, China and Pakistan urged the warring sides to reduce violence and called on the Taliban to forgo their spring offensive.
