French diplomat Jean Arnault has been appointed as UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Afghanistan and regional issues, the UN assistance mission said.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday appointed Jean Arnault as his personal envoy on Afghanistan and regional issues,

“The Secretary-General has asked Mr. Arnault to assist in the achievement of a political solution to the conflict, working closely with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and regional partners,” read a statement by UN mission.

“Mr. Arnault brings over 30 years of experience in international diplomacy focusing on peace settlements and mediation,” according to the statement,

Mr. Arnault has worked as delegate of the Secretary-General to the Colombia peace talks and UN chief’s special representative for Colombia from 2015 to 2018, it added.

He has also worked as UN Secretary General’s personal envoy for Bolivia from 2019 to 2020.

Jean Arnault is a philosophy graduate from Sorbonne Paris 1 and was a professor at the Paris School of International Affairs from 2012-2014.
