“We are still witnessing the worst [government] agencies, [which refrain] providing information to media, said Ainuddin Bahaduri, chairman of the Access to Information Commission, on Wednesday at a press conference rolling out the government’s accountability program.
It is impossible to fight corruption in the country if there is no transparency in access to information, according to Mr. Bahaduri.
Also, it has been months since the death of Yama Siawash, Afghan prominent journalist and employee of the Afghan Central Bank and two of his colleagues, but the commission stated the bank has yet to provide them with any clue.
Zahra Musawi, commissioner at the Access to Information Commission, said that Afghanistan’s Central Bank where Siawash and his colleagues were working has had no cooperation with the commission.
Journalists have nevertheless voiced concern over the status of access to information in the country.
Jawad Darwish, an Afghan journalist working for a local media, said the situation of access to information in Afghanistan is getting worse day by day.
According to the data provided by Access to Information Commission, Afghanistan’s Supreme Court and the Central Bank are the government agencies with the worst situation in terms of providing information.
