“The purpose of the visit is to expand bilateral relations, strengthen regional and international consensus on the Afghan peace process, and to increase cooperation in the joint fight against terrorism and organized crime in the region,” read a statement by Afghan Ministry of Defense.
According to the statement, Foreign Minister and his delegation is set to meet with his Russian counterpart and other senior officials during his three-day visit.
It comes weeks after Russia’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov said in an interview with Sputnik that Moscow prefers that all parties to the conflict in Afghanistan agree on the establishment of an inclusive and transitional coalition government.
The Russian envoy also said that the Taliban were “almost flawless” in fulfilling their promises with the United States.
But the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in response to Kabulov’s remarks said that some of Russian envoy’s views were “inconsistent with the current realities of Afghanistan and, in many cases, contradict the official statements of the friendly country of Russia.”
