Chief of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, who oversees the government side in peace negotiations, at the third monthly meeting of the council’s Regional and International Affairs Commission (RIAC), called on the international community and the countries in the region to press the Taliban and the countries influencing it into seizing the opportunity to end the long-decades war.
He once again hailed the decision of the United States to review the agreement it signed with the Taliban on February last year.
Under the deal between the U.S. and the Taliban, the insurgents promised not to allow Afghanistan to be a safe haven for terrorist groups to launch attacks on the United States, reduce violence and to enter into peace talks with the Afghan government.
The group, according to U.S. and Afghan officials, has kept close ties with al-Qaeda and increased violence despite its promises.
