Security officials in Afghanistan’s western Herat province said a bodyguard and the driver of deputy head of provincial national security directorate were killed in an armed attack which took place Sunday morning near the twelfth district of Herat city, the province’s capital.
According to sources, the NDS’ deputy head escaped the attack unhurt.
Sayed Wahid Qitali, the provincial governor, confirmed the attack, saying two members of the national security forces were killed.
He did not elaborate whether the men killed were the driver and bodyguard of the security directorate’s deputy.
Targeted assassinations, often unclaimed, have soared in the war-torn country recently, with Afghan authorities pointing the blame at Taliban.
But the group denies to be behind.
