Three members of the Afghan Senate—Mohammad Anwar Bashliq, Mohammad Azim Qoyash and Liyaqatullah Babakarkhil—who were tasked for inspecting custom offices in the northern Balkh province were detained earlier on December last year while accepting some $40,000 in bribe.
But these lawmakers were released after Afghanistan’s upper house of the National Assembly opposed to their imprisonment, dismissing to approve their detention.
The Anti-Corruption Justice Center, however, on Saturday sentenced each to 10 years and one month in prison and $40,000 fine.
It was their primary court verdict and both could move a higher court.
Nearly two weeks ago, mayor of Herat and another six people were also sentenced to three years in jail and $75,000 fine.
