Former colonel Abdul Razaq who was an influential figure in the Afghan southern province of Ghazni was shot dead near his house in the fourth police district of the capital Tuesday evening, governor spokesman Wahidullah Jumazada said.
The perpetrators managed to flee the area, according to the spokesman, who added police investigations were underway.
There was no claim of responsibility for his death.
Government officials, however, have constantly pointed the blame at Taliban to be behind assassinations.
