Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took the oath of office as the next president and vice president of the United States during an inauguration which came just two weeks after deadly riots by pro-Trump protesters at the U.S. Capitol.
“Democracy has prevailed,” Mr. Biden said after being sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts.
Outgoing President Donald Trump left the White House in the morning, becoming the first president who skipped to attended the inauguration.
Few moments ahead of Biden’s swearing in, Vice President Kamala Harris took the oath of office, becoming the first woman, first Asian-American and first black woman to hold the post.
The inauguration ceremony took place at the U.S. Capitol, where security measures were heightened weeks after building was stormed by violent Trump supporters in a deadly riot.
The ceremony was protected by some 25,000 National Guards,
There was no public in attendance amid security and coronavirus pandemic concerns.
Shortly after taking the office, President Biden signed 17 executive orders to dismantle Trump’s policies on the pandemic and immigration among other.
