Mohammad Zahir Haqyar, district governor of Washir in southern Helmand province was killed after armed men shot at him yesterday, said the provincial governor, Abdul Nabi Elham.
Two of his men were wounded in the attack which took place in the first police district of Lashkargah city, according to the governor.
The governor of Helmand has ordered security authorities to hunt down perpetrators and hold them to account.
The armed Taliban claimed responsibility for the “guerrilla attack”, saying Haqyar and one of his bodyguards were killed and another wounded.
