Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, who heads the Afghan High Council for National Reconciliation met Wednesday with Ross Wilson, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Kabul, in Sapedar Palace, his office said.
According to the statement, the two sides discussed U.S. supports in bringing peace to the war-torn country as well as the council’s leadership committee meetings.
It comes as the issue of interim government to have been discussed between Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. State Department’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, and Afghan politician has been hitting headlines in last few days.
The U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Ross Wilson, however, said on Twitter Wednesday that his country is committed to bringing about an end to the conflict in Afghanistan but was not advocating for interim government.
“We have not advocated, and the United States is not advocating an interim government,” Mr. Wilson tweeted. “The outcomes of Afghanistan Peace Negotiations are up to Afghans & we believe those outcomes should reflect the wishes & aspirations of the Afghan people.”
Negotiators from the Afghan government and the Taliban are holding meetings in the Qatari capital of Doha to prepare an agenda for the peace talks aimed at ending Afghanistan’s long-decades war, with the team representing the Islamic Republic putting ceasefire a top priority.
