Afghanistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement Wednesday at least five Afghans were killed and eight injured in Turkey’s Dogubeyazit district of eastern Agri province after their vehicle was shot at by Turkey border police.
Police fired on the vehicle carrying at least 13 undocumented Afghan nationals who illegally entered Turkey from Iran after the Turkish driver crashed through the police checkpoint with a high speed, according to foreign ministry’s statement.
After the car was hit, it ran off the road, killing five people and wounding another eight whose identities were released in the ministry’s statement.
Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Afghan Foreign Minister, in a phone conversation with the Ambassador of Afghanistan to Ankara instructed the transfer of the dead, delivering assistance to the families of victims as well as treatment of the Afghan nationals who injured in the incident to be focus of attention, his office said in the statement.
Foreign Minister Atmar said the ministry will work with other ministries and relevant government bodies to minimize illegal migrations.
