Second Round of Peace Talks: Islamic Republic’s Team Waiting for Taliban

A day after the Afghan government’s peace negotiation team left Kabul for Doha to resume peace talks with the Taliban, officials announced Wednesday the team was ready for the start of second round of peace talks with the Taliban and was waiting for the group’s announcement of preparations.

Faraidoon Khwazoon, spokesman for the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR), said in a tweet that the negotiation team of the Islamic Republic has begun its internal meetings and was waiting for the Taliban representatives.

The negotiation team of the Afghan government left for Doha Tuesday (January 5) to resume peace talks after a three-week break, during which they sought internal consultations.

The representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban have yet to resume the second round of talks.

In the first round of talks which lasted for three months, negotiators from the two sides agreed on a code of conduct for the talks and discussed a draft agenda ahead of taking the recess.
