The negotiation team of the Afghan government as well as the Taliban in similar statements announced the two sides of the negotiating table held second round of peace talks in an opening session and decided to discuss the items of the peace talks agenda on Saturday next week.
Officials from both negotiation teams made the announcement shortly after Faraidoon Khwazoon, spokesman for the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR), said in a tweet that the negotiation team of the Islamic Republic has begun its internal meetings and was waiting for the Taliban representatives to.
The two parties paused the talks for a 21-days break earlier on December to seek internal consultations.
The negotiation team of the Afghan government left for Doha Tuesday (January 5) to resume peace talks after the three-week pause.
In the first round of talks which lasted for three months, negotiators from the two sides agreed on a code of conduct for the talks and exchanged the list of items of a draft agenda ahead of taking the recess.
At the same time the news has been hitting the headlines, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the joint press point with Alexander Dobrindt, Chairman of the CSU Parliamentary Group, welcomed the resumption of peace negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban, adding many challenges and uncertainties remain; however, “peace talks are the only path to peace, the only way forward to a peaceful negotiated solution.”
