Pakistani authorities said the miners were on way to work when armed men kidnapped them and took them to the nearby mountains.
Six of the miners were dead on the spot, according to Pakistani officials speaking to media, who further elaborated that five others were critically wounded but then died on way to hospital.
Following the massacre claimed by Pakistani branch of Islamic State, protesters laid the bodies out on a main road, blocking traffic to demand justice for the victims.
Miners were identified as individuals from Pakistan’s Shia Hazara minority, with the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs recognizing seven of them to be Afghans.
The ministry in a statement “strongly” condemned the “horrible” attack, and pledged to work with the government of Pakistan to track down perpetrators and bring them to justice.
